9 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Phoenix Gutter Company

Gutter work attracts unlicensed operators because the barrier to entry looks low. It isn’t. Forming seamless gutter on-site takes a roll-forming machine, and hanging it correctly takes someone who understands pitch, capacity and fascia. These questions sort it out fast.

Are you ROC licensed, and what’s the number?

Arizona contractors doing work over $1,000 need a Registrar of Contractors license. Ask for the number and check it at roc.az.gov. It takes thirty seconds and it’s the single best filter available. (Ours is #300914.)

Are you bonded and insured, and can I see the certificate?

Not “yes.” The certificate. If someone falls off a ladder at your house uninsured, that becomes your problem.

Do you form the gutters on-site?

Seamless means roll-formed on your driveway to the exact length of each run. If they’re bringing pre-cut sections and joining them, that’s sectional gutter, and every joint is a future leak.

What gauge aluminum do you use?

.027 is standard, .032 is heavier. Neither is wrong, but a contractor who can’t answer this isn’t paying attention to what they’re installing.

Five-inch or six-inch, and why?

The right answer depends on your roof area and pitch. A contractor who quotes 5-inch on every house without looking at the roof isn’t sizing the system, they’re quoting a price.

What hangers do you use, and how far apart?

Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia, spaced around 24 inches, is the current standard. Spike-and-ferrule is the old way and it loosens.

What does the warranty cover, and is it in writing?

There’s a difference between a manufacturer warranty on the material and a workmanship warranty on the installation. You want both, and you want the workmanship one on paper. Ours is five years.

Will you haul away the old gutters?

Should be included. Ask, because sometimes it isn’t.

Can I see recent work in my area?

Not a portfolio of stock photos: actual jobs, ideally in your city, ideally with a customer you could call.

One flag worth naming: be careful with anyone who quotes over the phone without measuring. Linear footage, roof planes, corners, downspout count and fascia condition all change the number. A phone quote is a guess, and guesses get revised upward once someone’s on your roof.
